Hindsight – Exhibition & Diskurs: 10 years of Pop-Kultur

»It began in Berlin«: When the Pop-Kultur festival celebrated its premiere at Berghain in 2015, we never guessed that our event would have a ten-year career ahead of it. Only one thing was clear right from the start: We wanted to do things differently to other music (business) events in Germany. The artists and their needs should take centre stage; there should be more artistic experimentation. We wanted to create a festival that included everyone.

And we also wanted to break new ground in the area of festival advertising. Over the years, ten »artvertising« campaigns were created at the interface between art and advertising. Initiated in the first few years by the congenial English graphic designer and artist Scott King in collaboration with the Berlin agency fertig design, since 2019 created independently by graphic designers Norman Palm and Alexander Winkelmann, who collaborate as fertig design.

Now, in 2024, at our anniversary edition of the festival, is the perfect time to present all ten Pop-Kultur campaigns. In addition to the digital works and live sessions produced especially for the festival in the pandemic year of 2020 and in subsequent years, as well as Europe’s first music video library with accessible music clips and the deaf performances that the festival has commissioned.

In addition, we look back on ten eventful years of Pop-Kultur in exciting talks and with a pop quiz – while also taking a look into the future.
