Kulturpodcast »Lakonisch Elegant« meets Pop-Kultur: Kinder, ich muss kreativ sein! – Parenthood in music (de)

Children under the drum kit, children next to crumpled song lyrics, children on the tour bus: it’s a glamorous life for parenting musicians, isn’t it? Apart from soft-focus family photos, this is only true, as it is everywhere in the world, as long as you don’t talk about structures: who actually earns what, how is the music industry positioned in terms of equal rights and family support, who is doing what about the gender pay gap – and how, in turn, do touring life and music-making go together once the little ones arrive? What happens when you’re dead tired and can no longer write the eagerly awaited second hit album (or at least the next hit song) at night like you used to? Do your management and your audience wait, or who actually puts the pressure on you (apart from your own bank account, of course)? How can expectations be curbed and freedom be created? In this live podcast, we talk about being a parent and a family in the music business from the perspective of artists and the field – and we look forward to listening and sharing our own experiences. Children can also join in.

The Guests:

Johanna Amelie, a singer-songwriter and producer, was selected for the three-week »Artist in Residency« programme by the Musicboard in Paris in 2023. She didn’t come alone, though – she brought her little family with her. This required and enabled new structures.

MC Fitti, a German rapper, has been familiar with the music business and its challenges for families for many years – and he has also become a father during that time.

Steffi von Kannemann is the co-founder of the Berlin-based music agency Better Things and a mother of two children. In 2021, together with Marit Posch, she launched the initiative Parenthood in Music, which aims to improve working conditions for parents in the music industry.

Jorin Zschiesche, founder of Recordjet, a digital music distribution company. Family-friendliness is a focus of the company’s policies, not only because Jorin himself is now a father.
