»Wir sind die Türken von morgen« von Ulrich Gutmair – eine Lesung mit Musikbeispielen

With his book »Wir sind die Türken von morgen« (»We Are the Turks of Tomorrow«), taz writer Ulrich Gutmair puts forth a different perspective on Neue Deutsche Welle: German new wave wasn’t as German, or as male-dominated, as you might think from gimmicky hits like »Ich will Spaß«, »Da Da Da« and »Sommersprossen«: Sons of migrant workers such as Gabi Delgado-Lopez of DAF and Angelo Galizia from The Wirtschaftswunder created new forms of expression for a new era, while female bands such as Östro 430, Plastix and LiLiPUT from Switzerland poked fun at gender stereotypes. The prototypical Berlin band Ideal memorialised their Turkish friends with the song »Ask Mark Ve Ölüm«, while Die Toten Hosen sang about a girl called »Ülüsü«. Gutmair uses numerous interviews with central figures and his massive record collection to show how great the influence of apparent outsiders was on the so-called German pop miracle of NDW as well as on punk and German pop. Ulrich Gutmair will read, tell stories and play musical examples for us.
